With the holidays coming up, children no doubt have ornaments and cookies on the brain. This activity combines them both! Children can bake ornaments with this recipe that creates long-lasting shapes and the scent of apples and cinnamon.
Materials
- 4 ounces of ground cinnamon
- 10 tablespoons of applesauce
- A mixing bowl
- Wax paper
- Rolling pins
- A spoon
- Acrylic paints
- Small paint brushes
- Ribbon or string
- A variety of cookie cutters
- Rolling pins
- A cookie sheet
- An oven
Instructions
- Measure about 10 tablespoons of applesauce and put in a mixing bowl; add 4 ounces of ground cinnamon. Mix together and knead into a ball
- The dough should be moist. If it is not, add more applesauce. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle more cinnamon on it before rolling
- Roll out the dough on the wax paper
- Press the cookie cutters into the dough or cut with a knife. To avoid breakage, it is best to keep the designs under 4 inches
- Punch a hole towards the top of the ornaments, place them on the cookie sheet, and let them bake at 200° for 20 to 30 minutes
- Let cool on a wire rack
- Paint with acrylic
- Put a string or ribbon through the hole and hang them up!
