Try this science experiment for kids to explore insulation. Insulation refers to a material or substance that is used to stop heat, electricity or sound from going into or out of something. In this experiment, students will determine which insulator stops heat and keeps an ice pop the coldest.

Materials:

  • Three insulators: foil paper, a paper towel and a lunch bag
  • Three ice pops
  • Timer/watch

Instructions:

  • Wrap one ice pop in the paper towel and one in foil, and place one in the lunch bag.
  • Start the timer/watch.
  • Estimate what percent each ice pop is still frozen at the 2-, 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-minute marks.
  • After 20 minutes, determine which material is the best insulator.
